Owning Your God Given Identity

Writer: Crissy Roe 💚💗Crissy Roe 💚💗

From the moment we enter this world we are attacked with labels, people’s opinions, and so much more that can all play great parts in shaping us.

These same labels and more can cause many of us to hide in the background, make us not want to use our voice, or slow us down from going after all God has for us.

But eventually there comes a time where these labels, opinions, and more must break off of us to give us room to walk freely and own all God called us to be.

There comes a time to switch our thinking from harboring on every mistake that can hold us back to thinking about how our God can use those same mistakes to help excel us forward.

There comes a time to do the work it takes to unlearn everything we have known for so long about ourselves and open ourselves up to relearn a new way of thinking and doing that can only come from the one who created us.

Hebrews 10:35 states “So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you!”

For it’s not enough for us to just accept our God given identity but it’s just as important to trust and walk in confidence of the identity He gave us and the things He called us to do.

Here are 3 ways to help Own Your God Given Identity :

1. Stop Comparing

There is not one set of people on this Earth that have an identical DNA, not even twins. So why are you comparing yourself to others that don’t even have the same biological makeup as you ?

Psalms 139:13-14 states, “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex ! Your workmanship is marvelous - how well I know it.”

I highly recommend you to read the whole Psalms 139, it’s such a beautiful passage of scripture in times where you don’t feel so in love with how God created you. It truly reminds you of how unique and beautiful you are in God’s eyes.

This passage of scripture is truly a testament to how God thought out every detail in your life : your parents, your friends, the number of hairs on your head, your strengths, your weaknesses, your pains, and so much more.

So why do we go to social media and compare ONE PART of someone else’s life to our WHOLE LIFE ? You were created too complex for that !

God created you with great intentionality and with purpose in mind. Learn to trust what you have and stop comparing.

Practical Tip : Reflect and write a list of all God has working for you and go back to it whenever you see yourself comparing again.

2. Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses

God created us all with strengths and weaknesses. As humans, it's easier for us to showcase and talk about our strengths but the bible tells us to do it a bit differently.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 states “ Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

See it’s not enough for us to just know our strengths but also know our weaknesses are just as powerful because of Jesus Christ. God does not want us to only use our strengths but He also wants to use our weaknesses too.

I also want to point out that this scripture is not calling us to downplay our strengths but to be confident in both our weaknesses and strengths. This is why it’s so monumental to take the time to learn and pay attention to our weaknesses and strengths.

For every great superhero has strengths and weaknesses that they are well aware of, so make sure you know yours to better execute the things God may call you to do.

Practical Tip : Take time to create a t-chart with one half listing your strengths and the other half listing your weaknesses. Then make time to pray over your weaknesses and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal some ways to help you get stronger in those areas.

3. Remember that God Knows What's Best

Please remember that we serve an all knowing God and that same God knew what He was doing when He created you.

This can sometimes become hard, especially during rough seasons in our lives but God still knows best.

I remember quite a few times being angry with God as I thought about how He chose to set up my life. I thought about how some of the battles I am still trying to overcome are due to some of the things I had no control over. Like … Why would God do stuff like this to me ?

I always had some questions for God that did not get immediately answered but as time progressed, the Holy Spirit revealed those answers.

Although I’m still waiting on many answers, I still choose to believe that God knows best.

Isaiah 46:9-10 states, “Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like me. Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish.”

This scripture reminds us that we serve an all knowing God. A God who knows your pains, weaknesses, heartaches, victories, strengths, and more. Be confident in that and trust that He knows what He is doing to best prepare you for the path He has planned for you.

It’s not meant for us to know everything but it is meant for us to trust that God will reveal why He allowed some things to happen as time progresses.

Now read this affirmation out loud below :

Father God, I choose to be confident in what you gave me.

Father God, I choose to be confident in both my strengths and weaknesses.

Father God, I choose to be confident that you know what’s best for me.

Father God, I choose to own my God-given identity.

You are the all-knowing God and I choose to walk confidently in how you see me.
Amen.

I pray this blog blesses you in some shape or form. Please feel free to share this blog to anyone that you feel may need it.
